Our Data Scout division has a requirement for an experience Oil & Gas data manager in Houston, Texas.  This is an office based position with some scope for remote work. 

As a successful technical data manager (TDM) you will be required to apply TDM principles to support studies in Exploration and Field Development in the following specialty areas:

Geological Data - well and reservoir modelling data such as well headers, porosity, permeability, reservoir architecture, data derived from geochemical samples, and metadata such as Unique Well Identifiers and well coordinates. Typical stores for well data are Corporate Data Store for corporate data and Open Works for project data.

Petrophysical Data - well logs and Petrophysical analysis. Data types include wireline, MWD, borehole, sonic and core data. Typical data store is Recall and OpenWorks.

You will be responsible for managing technical data, usually for one specific discipline. Ensures all data is loaded and managed in appropriate Master Data stores and Corporate Data following EP16 standards.

You will carry out a variety of procedures dealing with multiple datatypes in order to execute:

  • Data loading/unloading
  • Data quality checks
  • Data manipulation
  • Project creation
  • Data cataloging/archiving
  • Data processing

You will ensure consistency of data in all related stores, and the relation between them by carefully managing metadata, for example Unique Identifiers and coordinates. Monitor quality of data being loaded/manipulated through process and procedural checks. Operational data management support is provided according to a variety of SSDM standards and procedures.

For the data and discipline in question, coach the local user community, support quality control through Technical Assurance, and contribute to the take-up of corporate standards for information management, including the management of data throughout its lifecycle from creation to archiving.

This role is more focussesd on exploration and production database management, and data integration, rather than heavy IT (not building applications per se).  Critical to the position is a strong understanding of data science, with particular requirements for advanced SQL query writing, and data analyics within an oil and gas exploration and production environment.

Education: to be successful within the position, you will require a degree (Master level preferred) in either a related science or computing field, in conjunction with strong hands-on experience in an EP environment.

Additional Job Details:

  • Advanced working knowledge in SQL (Structured Query Language), PL/SQL, Stored Procedures, and experience working with a variety of relational databases like Oracle and SQL Server, MS Access databases. • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement. • Basic understanding of data models and experience navigating through various physical data models/schemas. • Strong analytic skills related to working with various datasets from multiple Corporate databases. • Build/Support processes that perform data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and performance/optimization tuning. • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment. • They should also have some exposure using the following software/tools: • Experience with TIBCO Spotfire, Microsoft Power BI Tools, Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), TOAD for Oracle, Alteryx, FME (Data Integration platform) • Good in Unix/Linux Shell Scripting • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, VB.NET • Has skill level understanding of E&P data types and work practices, gained through working in the subsurface-, well engineering- or production domain, as well as the key technical documents that need to be published as part of the business cycle, and their relation to specific data types. • Monitors data quality and consistency for data and its metadata. • Has a skilled understanding of the principles and practices involved in the development and maintenance of Data Management solutions. • Actively applies standards, develops new common operational procedures and standards, and shares those with the global TDM community. • Possesses an understanding of the business applications (such as Oil Field Manager) used in the Discipline related workflows and can give support to the business staff to properly manage the data across these. • Communicates well, both orally and in writing, and has the skill to influence through persuasion in a formal context. • Has knowledge of procedures for, and experience in Project Management. • Exhibits a meticulous method of working and attention to detail.
